Known to many as a world cyclist, Gyan Maharjan prefers to introduce himself as a climate campaigner. Yet his journey extends far beyond cycling. He is a passionate advocate for climate awareness, a running and walking enthusiast, and above all, a proud ambassador of Nepal’s rich cultural heritage and handicrafts.
Cycling Across Borders, Carrying Nepal in His Heart
Since 2013, Gyan Maharjan has traveled to over 20 countries across Europe and Asia, cycling vast distances with a purpose: to raise awareness about climate change, particularly the increase in pollution in Kathmandu. Through his journeys, he engages with local communities, shares conversations about sustainability, and speaks about the urgent need for environmental responsibility.
But his campaigns are not limited to climate issues alone. Every destination becomes an opportunity to introduce Nepal, its landscapes, traditions, tourism potential, and extraordinary craftsmanship. He promotes Nepal to people who often know little about the country.
“Most people do not know about Nepal,” Gyan shares. “So I thought, why not promote Nepal? When I talk to them, I feel proud to be promoting my country and its arts.”
Promoting Nepal Through Meaningful Souvenirs
Wherever he travels, Gyan carries small yet meaningful tokens. These are not mere souvenirs from Nepal, they are stories, traditions, and identities woven into tangible forms. From intricate Thangkas and resonant singing bowls to Nepal’s iconic flags and aromatic spices, each gift becomes a conversation starter.
According to Gyan, Nepal’s handicrafts are world-class. “Our crafts are so fine; they are at the same level as artworks in Paris or other parts of Europe,” he says. “Yet, we haven’t been able to promote them as much as European countries do.”
By offering handcrafted items during his climate campaigns, Gyan sparks curiosity. People ask questions. They listen. They discover. What begins as a simple exchange often evolves into genuine interest in visiting Nepal or exploring its products further.
“It is not just a token,” he emphasizes. “It is an identity of our country.”
A Nation Rich in Craft and Culture
Nepal is globally admired for its natural beauty, from the Himalayas to lush valleys but its cultural wealth is equally profound. The country is home to 22 to 23 categories of handmade products, crafted by skilled artisans whose techniques have been passed down through generations.
From spiritual art to metalwork, textiles, wood carving, felt products, and traditional spices, Nepal’s handicraft industry holds immense untapped potential. However, factors such as limited manpower, policy gaps, and insufficient international promotion have restricted its global reach.
Gyan believes that individual efforts can complement institutional ones. By integrating cultural promotion into his environmental activism, he demonstrates how grassroots initiatives can build global bridges.
Looking Ahead
Gyan Maharjan’s journey is far from over. In the coming years, he plans to travel to Australia, continuing his dual mission of raising climate awareness and promoting Nepalese handicrafts to new markets. His vision is not only to inspire environmental action but also to create opportunities for Nepalese artisans by connecting them with international audiences.
Through every mile he pedals, Gyan carries more than supplies. He carries pride, heritage, and hope. His bicycle becomes a moving platform for climate advocacy and cultural diplomacy proving that one individual, driven by passion and purpose, can amplify a nation’s voice across continents.
In Gyan Maharjan, Nepal has more than a cyclist. It has a storyteller, an environmental advocate, and a cultural ambassador. Someone who believes that promoting Nepal’s identity is not just an act of patriotism, but a responsibility.
